Traditional art practices are tried and true, but do we have to stick with the old standards of drawing, watercolour, acrylic based on the Old Masters? There are so many more ways to engage students in a study of line, colour, and shape than the traditional approaches, and these new avenues tie nicely with a variety of curricula. Studying Indigenous artists in Canada- notably the Indigenous Group of Seven and Christi Belcourt and Bill Reid- provides a wealth of content and new methodologies for painting that can be more accessible for students. Likewise, famed "street" artists who have turned more mainstream, like Banksy, Invader, and Shepard Fairey, provide opportunities for students to work with meaningful, personally symbolic images in unique and more student-friendly formats. This session explores the multicultural and interdisciplinary potential for projects that are art based, fun, and accessible for all learners.

Note: Participants would need to have access to a pencil, paper, a marker, and a transparency page.
