Incorporating Indigenous and Non Conventional Art Forms into the Classroom - All Grades
Traditional art practices are tried and true, but do we have to stick with the old standards of drawing, watercolour, acrylic based on the Old Masters? There are so many more ways to engage students in a study of line, colour, and shape than the traditional approaches, and these new avenues tie nicely with a variety of curricula. Studying Indigenous artists in Canada- notably the Indigenous Group of Seven and Christi Belcourt and Bill Reid- provides a wealth of content and new methodologies for painting that can be more accessible for students. Likewise, famed "street" artists who have turned more mainstream, like Banksy, Invader, and Shepard Fairey, provide opportunities for students to work with meaningful, personally symbolic images in unique and more student-friendly formats. This session explores the multicultural and interdisciplinary potential for projects that are art based, fun, and accessible for all learners.

Note: Participants would need to have access to a pencil, paper, a marker, and a transparency page.

Assessing Through Instruction using Math Warm-ups - Grades 9 & 10
Having students at various levels of understanding is nothing new, but, this year is a little extra weird.   We want to build a class culture of mathematicians who are willing to take risks, make mistakes and share their thinking.   We also want to know where students are at with their current understandings. Enter the “Math Warm-up” (or hook, or starter, or launch, whatever you want to call it). Maybe these are new to you, maybe you have used them many times, either way, we want to investigate how Math Warm-ups can be used as an assessment tool while building the desired class culture.
Join us for an interactive session where we will experience some of these warm-ups that allow for multiple entry points (differentiation) and assessment. We will look at criteria for what makes a great warm-up, and look at sample checklists for how to record your assessment of student responses. You will have a chance to interact with your colleagues and leave with ideas/resources that you can use tomorrow.

Note: Please bring lined paper to the session and download and print the attachment file (Two-Way Calculations).

Zoom Link:
Meeting ID: 952 8057 6861

There are a lot of integer ideas that need to be explored prior to operating. And, many of the procedures we ask kids to use rely on rule following as opposed to number sense being their “rule”. Math is about making sense of what is going on. Math is much more than answers. Answers are important but they are not the math (and are certainly not an indication of understanding). The math happens on the way to the solution.

Often the big ideas behind all math are ignored or unexplainably hidden from students. Subtraction in particular seems mysterious to many students. How can we give them something more tangible to hang onto? Anything we ask students to do should be able to be explained within a model that shows the math. The goal is to be true to the math, see the math in action and stay away from just giving students ways to get answers.

Engaging Pre-Reading Strategies to Ignite Interest! - Grades 5-12
What do you do prior to reading to connect your students with a particular text? Do you give your students a short synopsis of the book and dive in? Or do you provide engaging activities prior to reading the text? During this interactive session you will participate in some pre-reading strategies that frontload meaning for students. These fun and engaging activities access prior knowledge, interact with portions of the text prior to reading, and students have the opportunity to construct meaning before they begin reading the text. A few strategies will also be shared for during-reading and after-reading strategies.

What are the “basics” of Div. I math?
Place Value understanding is the foundation for the development of early mathematical thinking. Understanding place value is a necessity for students to move past primitive and inefficient strategies like counting and to be considered an additive thinker. It is also a key tool used by those we consider to be numerate.

In this workshop, we will explore:
- how to make learning into an investigation
- using models and context to make the math more authentic
- big ideas that need to be focused on throughout the Div. I years
- how place value understanding relates to mental math skills and building intuitive thinking
- use of open number lines to build number sense continuously throughout the elementary years.

Conferencing With Students About Their Writing - Grades 1-6
What is conferring? Why Confer? Research by John Hattie (Visible Learning, 2008) shows that one of the methods of teaching that accelerates a learner’s progress is the provision of feedback. During student independent work, teachers have an opportunity to conference with students. The hardest thing about conferring with student writing is not doing the work for them! During this session we will collaborate about what conferring is and is not. We will observe examples of conferring by writing scholars so you can walk away with purposeful ideas to offer guided practice and provide individualized feedback with students’ writing. Examples will be in grades 1-6 but all are welcome!
